REEL MURDER: PART 9:
TRAIL OF DEATH
Follow the adventures of private investigator Tom Logan as he tries to uncover a serial killer loose in 1930’s Hollywood. Here is an excerpt from a future issue:
I drug myself towards one of the pine trees and rising up on one elbow came up to a sitting position using its’ base as a support. I was still breathing heavy, my throat was dry, and when I coughed, I spat up some blood. Behind me I heard the sound of gravel cascading down the slope and even though I was too tired to turn I knew it was the girl. I felt like hell, and I think she saw it in my eyes as she came rushing to my side.
“Why do you do it, Logan?” She said, tears welling up in her eyes. She reached up to touch my cheek and I winched from the pain.
“Maybe its’ because my mother believed in God and my dad justice.” I tried to laugh but it hurt too much. Figuring that I owed her a more serious explanation I then added, “Perhaps I’m not as cynical as I look. Maybe I believe the world is worth saving. Its’ citizens might be apathetic, but I still sense a lot of good in them. Sure they may be waiting for some other guy to stand up in their place…They being too weak to go it alone. Well lets’ just say I’m that other guy…saving the world from itself…if only one bit at a time.”
I don’t know what brought that to the surface. Perhaps it was just the weariness of the case. However she must have liked what I said because she smiled, gently adding,
“Well, you certainly were my Saint George!”
I felt more like Don Quixote and I didn’t have the heart to tell her that this wasn’t over quite yet. There was still one more dragon to slay.
